Sanlam Insurance, part of the Sanlam Group which was established in 1918, is one of the largest financial services providers in South Africa. Sanlam is a firmly established Medical Aid as well. The Sanlam Group operates in 11 African countries, Malaysia, India and has niche businesses in certain developed markets. They have the largest Pan-African footprint of insurance groups based on their number of countries. Furthermore, the group became a listed entity on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and Namibian Stock Exchange following its demutualization in 1998.
When visiting Sanlam’s website, there is no list of medical aid plans to choose from. Instead, there is a personalised form to complete so that a visitor can be ‘matched’ with the best medical aid plan options for them. This is because Sanlam does not offer Standard Medical aid policies directly. Instead, a medical brokerage that they solely own, Completed, acts as an independent broker and helps consumers search through the variety of different options available to them for a basic medical aid plan offered by another company.
Sanlam offers two levels of coverage, Standard and Comprehensive. The Standard plan covers shortfalls in hospital coverage and provides a cash benefit for hospitalisation day and provides some other outpatient benefits.
Sanlam’s Comprehensive option covers a lot more. The only requirements for enrollment are that the insured must be under 60 years old and the holder of an active registered medical aid policy from an approved firm.
Both of Sanlam’s plans surprisingly offer more than other plans in terms of reimbursement. For example, most required dental procedures are covered and there are a death and disability payment that will pay a family’s medical aid and gap coverage for six months after a catastrophic event. Also, the daily cash benefit when you are in the hospital is a plus.
